‘Tis the season to be… Married?

Tips on popping the big question this season

As the festive period looms large and tinsel glitters amongst trees entwined with tiny fairy lights, it’s easy to see why this magical time of year is, for many people, perfect for a proposal.

Established in 1896, Jonathan David Jewellers have shared in the excitement of countless ‘say yes to the, er – ring’ moments, and so, as the most popular season for engagement approaches, we’ve used our wealth of experience to compile a definitive guide to getting it right.

‘The World is Full of Obvious Things Which Nobody by any Chance Ever Observes’ – S. Holmes

Before even leaving the house – relax, watch some Sherlock Holmes and channel those powers of observation! What style of jewellery does your bride-to-be wear on a daily basis? Where does she stand on the bling-scale? Are we thinking Meghan Markle or Kim Kardashian-West? Does she wear mainly white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or platinum jewellery? Or a mixture of all?

Your detective work should reveal whether to shop for a traditional ring, or whether you’re looking for something more alternative.

Vena Amoris

The Romans believed the fourth finger of the left hand concealed a vein running directly to your beloved’s heart. For this reason the vein was named ‘Vena Amoris’ or, ‘Vein of Love’.

Romantic story right? Unfortunately it is completely biologically inaccurate. Similarly, imagine constructing the most profoundly personal proposal, everything falling in to place with perfect precision – then BOOM! – Ring doesn’t fit. Awkward.

How to avoid this school boy error? Here are a few of our suggestions:

1. Borrow a ring from the collection of your bride-to-be and bring it in store to have it sized professionally – just make sure it’s from the correct hand, as the dominant hand can often be slightly larger.

2. Take her to buy a distraction ring and whilst in store persuade her to get professionally sized as a part of the process.

3. Challenge a friend or family member – provide them with a ring sizer and ask them to casually bring up the subject over coffee, or get the girls to take her out for the day, incorporating a subtle ‘engagement ring testing for jokes’ element.‘

‘A woman who cuts her hair, is about to change her life’ – Coco Chanel

Well, make no mistake – the cut of this diamond will be just as – if not more- significant.

With so much variation out there, why not let us make your decision a little more clear-cut?

Timeless Traditionalist

Round, oval and princess cuts are among the most popular and traditional for a bride-to-be looking for a sparkler to stand the test of time. Pair a more traditional cut with a slim cut band in the precious metal of your choice, and maybe have it engraved for a little extra wow factor.

Vintage Vogue

Emerald, cushion and asscher cuts hold the balance between traditional and quirky perfectly. From the 29.4 carat emerald cut Cartier diamond of Elizabeth Taylor’s engagement in 1957, to the asscher cut diamond Pippa Middleton sports today, these stunning selections are sophisticated stones with a splash of vintage style, sure to survive for centuries.

Quintessentially Quirky

A trillion, baguette, marquise or even heart cut diamond would be the perfect choice for a more unconventional bride. Although not commonly thought of in conjunction with engagement, the triangular trillion stone would create a spectacularly unique yet elegant stand-alone piece, whilst a heart cut could encourage a ‘yes’ from the most hopeless romantic.
